About

Experiential Learning

At Wittenberg, learning goes beyond the classroom. Through internships, research, service, study away, and hands-on projects, students gain real-world experiences that prepare them for lives of meaning and purpose. These opportunities expand perspectives, deepen knowledge, and strengthen connections with faculty, peers, and the community.

Experiential learning is central to the Wittenberg experience, helping students discover their strengths, connect learning to life, and prepare for meaningful personal and professional futures. From research and internships to travel, leadership, athletics, and service, these opportunities enrich the student experience while playing a vital role in attracting and retaining students. During Week for Witt, your generosity helps expand these transformative opportunities and ensures they remain a defining part of a Wittenberg education.

Study Abroad & Study Away: Expanding Horizons
A Wittenberg education can take students across the country and around the world. Through semester-long international study, faculty-led experiences, and specialized academic programs, students explore new cultures, deepen their understanding of the world, and connect classroom learning with firsthand discovery. Opportunities include studying in Germany and Costa Rica, participating in the Witt in Washington Semester, and exploring marine science through the Duke University Marine Laboratory in North Carolina. Gifts to Wittenberg's various study abroad, field study, and study away funds help support these valuable educational opportunities.

FIRE Week: Bringing Learning to Life
FIRE Week (Focused, Integrated, Reflective, Experience) is a distinctive part of Wittenberg's Connections Curriculum, giving students the opportunity to immerse themselves in learning beyond the traditional classroom. Through faculty- and staff-led experiences, students explore new subjects, engage with communities, and put theory into practice. From international experiences to projects closer to home, FIRE Week inspires curiosity, collaboration, and personal growth.

Student Research & Discovery: Inspiring Innovation
Working alongside faculty mentors, Wittenberg students explore important questions, conduct original research, and develop skills that prepare them for graduate study and professional careers. Opportunities such as Summer Student Research provide hands-on experience in scientific investigation and other academic disciplines, while specialized funds support additional student opportunities in biology. These experiences encourage critical thinking, creativity, and discovery.

Internships & Community Engagement: Making a Difference
Through the Susan Hirt Hagen Center for Civic and Urban Engagement, Wittenberg students connect their education with meaningful service to the Springfield community. The Summer Civic Internship Program provides paid opportunities for students to work with local organizations while learning from community leaders and building professional skills. Support for community engagement and internship opportunities helps strengthen the connection between Wittenberg students and the communities they serve.

Career Exploration & Entrepreneurship: Preparing for the Future
Wittenberg's Office of Career Engagement helps students explore their interests, discover their strengths, and prepare for life after graduation. Through career advising, internships, professional development, and connections with alumni and employers, students gain valuable experience and build confidence as they pursue their goals. Tiger Ventures provides additional opportunities for students to apply their knowledge through student-run business ventures that foster entrepreneurship, creativity, and leadership.

Student Success: Supporting Every Step of the Journey
The COMPASS: Sweet Success Center connects students with personalized guidance and resources to help them thrive academically and personally. From success advising and academic coaching to connecting students with campus opportunities and support services, COMPASS helps students navigate their Wittenberg experience and build a foundation for future success.
